TO WII OR NOT TO WII, THAT IS THE QUESTION …

 

  And I’m hoping that some of my blog readers may have answers … or at least opinions!

  I am probably the antithesis of everything that the average Wii-junkie represents. I never got into video games (not sure if it was due to a total lack of coordination or poor eyesight or what-have-you).

  I could barely operate a “pong” joystick (am I even using the correct terminology here???), much less hold my own in “Rock Band” (I single-handedly managed to “crash” a system in my attempt to perform Steely Dan’s “Bodhisattva” recently).

  And when it comes to my athletic acumen, well, it’s probably better left unsaid. There is a reason I watch for a living.

  Now, 2009 is probably the first year where “lose 10 pounds” is not on my to-do list. Not that I wouldn’t like to lose 10 pounds. Who wouldn’t? But for the first time, thanks (or no thanks) to a bout with an ulcer this past fall, I am actually quite close to my “goal weight.”

  The problem is more in the area of “redistribution” or, in a nutshell, conditioning. The combination of gravity and a tendency to be a total lox has not been kind and I am ready to “work out” (isn’t that pretty much second to “lose 10 pounds” on most people’s resolution list anyway?)

  But I am nothing if not realistic. I know I will NEVER go to the gym. I will never do sit-ups on my bedroom floor. I will get some workout DVD which will then gather dust after the second or third workout.

  However, from what I am hearing, Wii (and Wii Fit) is getting rave reviews. It’s fun! It’s active! It’s PRO-active! I can do all sorts of cool things without getting bored and get into shape!

  Maybe I can get rid of my lunchlady upper arms before it’s time to get back into tank tops (though of course if the awesome Stacy and Clinton from “What Not To Wear” were to ever get a look at me, those tank tops would probably all be in the big garbage can anyway).

  Maybe I can get my legs into good enough condition that they are not screaming from pain when I walk up two flights of stairs.

  Not sure if there is a Wii activity that also gives a virtual facelift but who knows what they’ll come up with next?

  Frankly, given the current economy (not to be a Debbie Downer here or anything), I couldn’t really imagine dropping that kind of dime on what is, for all intents and purposes, a TOY.

  However, Mr. GotMilb is also intrigued by this after having bowled a few frames of Wii Bowling and playing a few sets of Wii Tennis.

  And the GotMilbs’ 25th anniversary is coming up very soon (I know it’s not gold or diamond, so maybe 25 is “technology”). So we were thinking MAYBE instead of getting “stuff” for each other for the big event, we’d get together and buy a Wii.

  But I need INPUT,. I need OPINIONS. I need your thumbs up/thumbs down … do you have one? If so what do you LOVE about it? What do you HATE about it? PLEASE help us make an informed decision … IS IT WORTH IT?

Lisa, we have the Wii (hey – I’ve got teenaged boys!) and I will have to say I LOVE the bowling, tennis and….boxing! You can really get a cardio workout when you box! They have the new Mario baseball game (sorry – the title escapes me!) and the way our youngest plays it he can work up quite a sweat! Just my thoughts and between us – there is nothing like beating my husband on one of the games! And like you, I don’t play any video games!

Lisa, my suggestion is to find a friend who has a wii and ask if you can play on it a bit OR go to a Best Buy or some other electronics store to test out the system there.. also here’s a link to the wii fit for more information.. http://www.nintendo.com/wiifit/launch/?ref=
